How Often Should You Update Your Acting Headshot?

The most common mistake I see actors do is continuously invest in getting updated actor headshots 2 to 3 times a year.

I think the perception is that if they get more headshots, different character looks, and work with more photographers that they'll get more work. Starting out, you only really need two looks, one commercial headshot and one theatrical headshot.

These shots are supposed to last you a very long time. I mean, you don't want to be spending $500 if you don't have to because headshots can be very expensive.

What Should You Wear For An Acting Headshot?

I tell my clients not to wear anything too fashionable or trendy in their headshots. Timeless clothing allows for you to use your headshot for a longer period of time, and it doesn't date you. The only time you truly need to update your acting headshots, is when your physical look drastically changes. If you notice you've aged a bit, if you've colored, cut or changed your hair, if you've had obvious weight changes, or if you've had a glow up and look different.

When To Replace Your Actor Headshots

It's time to replace your acting headshots when your last headshot is just not working for you, or worse, it's just a terrible headshot. The time you may want to update your actor headshots is when you start noticing a pattern of a type of character you get sent out for. That's typically when I see actors come to my studio looking for specific character shots like the girl next door, the bad guy, the lead man, and the modern mom.
