What is a fashion model?
A fashion model is typically someone who has won the “genetic lottery” meaning they have the ideal height, body type, and face for traditional European fashion standards. While the typical standards have changed significantly in recent years due to social media, most agencies still set the heigh requirement for fashion models at 5’7 for females and 6’ for men, but they always make an exception when a model has a breathtaking face OR they have a large platform on social media OR they’re someone’s famous kid.
Most fashion agencies have body standards that they look for as well which is the typical thin model you see in high fashion, “commercial body” which is a version of thin, but usually tailored to more swimsuit models (think Maxim), and plus sized divisions. However, there are some newer fashion modeling agencies today that are deviating from the norm by signing people of all sizes.
What is a commercial/print model?
Commercial/print models are essentially everyday people. These are models who are usually represented by talent agencies. They come in all different heights, sizes, and looks. Some have really great smiles and are extremely attractive and others can be very ordinary looking, but all generally have good natural smiles.
These models get a lot of work, sometimes even more than a fashion model, because a lot of companies need real looking people to sell services and products everyday. Brands like Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Dawn Dish Soap, Apple, Beats by Dre, Sony, etc. Every single major company needs to shoot a print ad campaign and commercial to promote whatever their latest products are and that’s where talent models have opportunities to get work.
Sometimes fashion models and talent models can be sent for the same castings, but the only time you’ll ever see a talent model getting a casting for a fashion job is if they meet the height requirement.
